Exploding Sky at Barnegat Inlet

Canon EOS 5D, 30 mm, 1/100 sec, f 11, 50

This weekend I took my first of three summer vacations. I spent a few days in Ship Bottom, NJ (on Long Beach Island) with my brothers and our girlfriends/spouses. I had intended to wake up on Saturday morning to drive down to Barnegat Lighthouse and photograph the sunrise, but I had set my alarm incorrectly the night before and slept right through it. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because if I HAD gotten up on Saturday morning, I would not have made the trip again Sunday morning and I would have missed this incredible sight. Genevieve, Brendan, Christine and I showed up at the lighthouse around 5:30 AM and right away it seemed as if it was going to be a throw away sunrise - too many clouds, very foggy, very humid. There actually was no literal sunrise, and we didn't even see the sun until about 20 minutes after it was supposed to have risen. Shortly before we were going to leave, all of the clouds which I thought were ruining our shot at good photos starting shooting out these beautiful rays of sunlight. Later this week I will have a better view of this sky, sans lighthouse, to post.

  • Gen » This made getting up that early worth it. Breakfast helped a little too.
  • Russ » Phenomenal shot, Justin. This reinforces that great photography is all about the light.
  • JVL » Maybe I should get an alarm clock too - very nice.
  • Claus » WOW!! now this is a nice image! I have not much els to say!
  • Laurie » 3 Vacations? I am jealous! I cannot even manage one this summer...in fact I haven't had a real vacation in...oh well...it's too depressing!

I will just have to live vicariously through your vacation photos. "Old Barney" is looking wonderful with those amazing rays of sunlight.
  • Mrs. Faust » ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
  • Keenan » I'm surprised Brendan wasn't hanging off of/climbing up the lighthouse
  • scott neumyer » Insanely awesome, sir!
  • Justin Gaynor » Keenan - the only reason we stayed around long enough to get this shot is because Brendan jumped a fence near the lighthouse and walked about a mile down a restricted area of rocks along the inlet, so far that we couldn't even see him anymore. So we were just waiting for him.
  • Hadassah » I've decided your true gift is being in the right place at the right time, on a constant basis... Or is it that we all are and you are just able to capture those moments more effectively and beautifully than most?

Either way, this is mind blowing(no pun intended) as usual. Keep it up!
  • Diane - Daily Walks » We need only ask and the world (or should I say the sky) will open up for us. A blessing indeed but it takes talent to capture all that beauty! I am glad you missed your original awakening for the next one!
  • Tero » Great sky and wonderful rays of light!
  • Daniel » This is a perfect photo. The clouds with the sunbeams breaking through - great!
  • tetsu » Wow!!! Amazing light! :-)
  • Raffi » i like the light and the color here. Great Landscape shot. I dont think it could be any better!
