Ping-Pong Anyone?

20 Minutes of Moonlight

Canon EOS 5D, 50 mm, 1247 sec, f 22, 200

I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend. I spent Sunday with my family in Point Pleasant, NJ, which as been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. I drove down Saturday night so that I could spend the night on the beach practicing some long exposure techniques, and this image is the result. It was taken around 3am, on a freezing freezing freezing cold beach. It is a 20 minute exposure, with the aperture stopped all the down to 22, and I think the resulting image is beautiful. As soon as the weather warms up, I'll head back down to capture a few more shots that I thought were interesting.

  • Welchie » Brilliant shot! How did you get it so sharp on such a long exposure?
  • ksH.be | Faucher Romain | Phot » Le seul mot qui me viens à l'esprit est "surréaliste" !

  • Rob Jaudon » This is superb! So how exactly do you get the focus correct when it is dark? Also, did you use any noise reducers on this? This a great capture and I can't wait to see more.
  • Justin Gaynor » Welchie: I was using a pretty heavy duty tripod for the shot, which is really key when doing long exposures on the beach because the you tend to get very strong gusts of wind when you're close to the water. I was also lucky that this night was a pretty calm, still night. On a really windy night, I wouldn't have gotten such a sharp shot.

Rob: Most times when shooting at night like this I use manual focus and just focus to infinity. However, for this shot, since I wanted to focus on the rocks, I knew they were about 10 feet away so I manually set the focus. I did not use any noise reducers, it actually came out pretty clean...I'm sure the low ISO setting helped.

  • Meticulis.com » Some of the most interesting pieces I've seen are the result of long exposures. This is obviously pretty attention-grabbing...mostly in just trying to figure out what is in the frame. Nice work.
